The Penn Program on Race, Science, and Society (PRSS) invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate to work with PRSS and the Penn and Slavery Project, July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020. The Penn and Slavery Project investigates the University of Pennsylvania’s relationship to the institution of slavery. PRSS’s work in the Penn and Slavery Project focuses on the legacies of slavery and racism in medical education. PRSS seeks to foster transformative approaches to the role of race in science and society through collaborative engagement with scientists, scholars, and students from social science, biological, medical, public health, and humanistic perspectives.
The postdoctoral research associate will synthesize the Penn and Slavery Project’s prior findings regarding the connections between Penn’s medical school and slavery, research the legacy of the medical school’s connections with slavery in historical and contemporary medical training, participate in developing proposals for addressing that legacy in collaboration with the medical school, and help to share the project’s findings and proposals with the Penn community and the broader public.
Applicants must hold a PhD in History, Africana Studies, or a related field or expect to receive such a degree by July 1, 2019.
