Anthropology Colloquium - Taking Race Out of Human Genetics

PRSS Director, Dorothy Roberts, and Working Group members, Sarah Tishkoff and Michael Yudell, discuss their paper published in Science on a better way to do scientific research.

Abstract: Scientists have struggled over the meaning and utility of biological race concepts for more than a century. Today, biologists are stuck in a paradox: that race can be both an important tool to elucidate human genetic diversity and that race is a poorly defined marker and imprecise proxy of that diversity. The use of biological concepts of race in human genetic research—so disputed and so mired in confusion—is problematic at best and harmful at worst. It is time for biologists to find a better way.
